The Masks We Wear

Vicky Prior

“Since my husband and I both struggle from mental illness, I feel connected to creating artwork to show emotions and feelings that we struggle with daily due to the illness. It is easier to paint or photograph feelings than to speak about them and in a way it acts as therapy. I am definitely not ashamed to admit I suffer from depression, but sometimes it’s hard to explain why some days you are not your happy jolly self and no matter what people do to try and cheer you up, they can’t.

I feel it acts as a kind of release when I am creating something. It helps me to focus on what I need to and briefly stops me suffering and thinking about sad subjects. I hope to one day create something that really inspires people and moves them in the way I am moved when I look at certain artworks.”
